WOMEN PHILANTHROPISTS ANNOUNCE $100,000 GRANT OPPORTUNITY
BERGEN COUNTY, NJ – June 24, 2008 - Women United in Philanthropy, New Jersey’s first women’s giving circle has announced the availability of up to $100,000 in grant funding for Bergen County programs serving women. The deadline for applications is July 15, 2008.
“We are very excited to have reached our 100-member mark and be able to award a grant of such impact,” states Maxine Frampton, director and member of the group. “Our members are looking to give this year’s contribution to a program that makes a big difference in the lives of women—something that truly helps lift them out of poverty by giving them the tools they need, be that housing, health care, job training or financial support.”
Each year, WUiP members contribute $1,000 or more to the circle’s pooled grant fund and vote to award it in its entirety to a creative program that helps change the lives of women. The membership has identified its chief concerns to be helping women access affordable housing, job training and placement, affordable healthcare, and financial help in times of unexpected crisis.
“In three short years, we have a strong history of making a difference for women in Bergen County,” notes Susan Mitchell Abbate, leader of this year’s grant team. In 2006, the circle awarded its first $50,000 grant to the Interreligious Fellowship for the Homeless to open a transitional home for women with children living in the agency’s family shelter. Last year, the members awarded their second grant of $70,000 to 55 Kip Center to launch a support program of financial and health care management and education for senior women living alone or caring for an infirmed loved one.
At their Annual Meeting to be held at the Stony Hill Inn on October 16, each member casts a vote for the organization presenting the most innovative and promising program. When the votes are tallied, Women United in Philanthropy will award one grant of up to $100,000 to a local non-profit organization.
“We believe every woman in our community should have access to a safe place to live, a living wage, affordable health care, and the help of others when she urgently needs it,” said Kathy Ludwig, a founding member and resident of Demarest.
“When we announced the request for proposals we encouraged Bergen County nonprofits with the vision and capacity to manage a gift of this size to apply. We are seeking proposals from those with the passion and commitment to making a lasting difference with the financial resources we have to offer.”
By drawing on the collective financial resources, knowledge and talents of its members, Women United in Philanthropy achieves a greater level of impact than most donors can achieve alone.
As a membership association, Women United in Philanthropy is a network of like-minded women in Bergen County dedicated to empowering women in every aspect of their lives. It encourages members to learn about, talk about and use money as an effective, powerful tool for change. It supports the advancement of women as business and community leaders, and educates its members about community needs and how best to address them.
Members are not obligated to volunteer or participate in committee work but every member is expected to vote on grant and policy decisions.
